DUNES: A Quest of Survival

The place is the desert: cruel unforgiving lands that lay between the Great Plains, and the Southern Jungles. Here great sandstorms sweep through the dry lands, while creatures more dangerous than one might believe, live in the burning heat. In the dryness of the desert, creatures have become scavengers, stalking unsuspecting travellers in hopes for a meal. Hell Hounds have been known to live in the heart of the badlands and in the mountains, along with a rare race of small poisons dragons. These dragons have become the House name for the nomads, but since the nomads follow no recognised political house; they call themselves Peoples of Sand Dragon.

Technology is not a common thing in the desert, other than in the Trade City, where there is a chaotic mix of technology and those who oppose it. Men with swords ride down crowded streets in ATV’s, while others with advanced guns and magnetic shields gallop from the docks upon powerful muscular steeds. Tribes from the Badlands occasionally venture to the coast in search for technologies, though the nomads often do not trust the metallic inventions from the Industrial Island.

Unlike from popular belief, the desert is alive with peoples, tribes, small towns and villages that have formed around water holes, or dug wells, though no towns or villages are known to exist in the Badlands. These inner desert lands have been given to the nomads who have learned to survive in the harsh environment, only the bravest or those who are stupid enough travel through the badlands, most others take the long way from city to city. Nomad caravans are known to venture out of the Badlands, selling goods to the local towns on the outskirts, exotic cactus plants and dragon skin hides have become prized in the Trade City.

In the desert, not only the environment nor the creatures of the least of a travellers worries, for there is one other race that a traveller must beware of; the Drow. Having created a large empire in the Northern Mountains, the Drow have a large hold on the desert lands. Though the Drow are a formidable opponent, they still do not dare anger the nomads. But rumours have spread that the Drow and the Nomads of the Badlands work together in a peaceful communion, trading goods and supplies.

Other rumours have spread from the Southern Towns, which boarder the great Jungles. Rumours of people mysteriously going missing, only to have their heads found on pikes on the jungles edges, have spread up through the desert. But these rumours hold more truth than most desert dwellers care to believe, since the village of Tieri which lays the deepest to the South, is a village of native peoples who migrated from the deep jungles of the South.

Who ever dare to live, or venture into the Dunes, is sure to live and adventure.

Do you dare?

"MELLLLLLLLLTIIIIIIING.... IM MEEEEELLLLLLLTIIIIIIIIING"...

*the drow falls to his knees*

"Oh for the love of the gods"

*He stands up and holds his hands to the sky, his hands glowing with a warming light*

"RAIN DAMNIT!"

*Small dark clouds begin to form above him, and slowly a refreshing drizzle begins to pour over him, he sighs happily putting a hand through his hair, then taking a drink from his flask which he enchanted to have an unlimited supply of water*

"Now for Damen to find a village to sleep in..." He says spinning a finger in a circle pointing to the sky "Thhhhhat way"
He seemingly points in a random direction then starts to skip towards it, then stopping because he was kicking wet sand everywhere. Having actualy pointed in the direction of the closest village which was only 8 miles away

Clank....Clank.....Clank.....<laughause>.......BOOOMM!!!!!

The young man stands up frm the ground and looks at the beastly piece of metal in the large room before him.

"arr! now I know what pappy died, he got tired of tinkrin' with you, bloody sandships" He kicks the metal casing of the large object, and hops around "OW! my blasted foot!" he punches it "OWWW! MY HAND!!!" he scowls and goes up stairs into his workshop.

"Barady?......Barady....?!" The familiar voice called, Barady popped his head out from the top of the stairwell.

"What?!" He asked annoyed.

"I heard the explosion, I came to see if you were alright..." The old man in the doorway said.

"I already told ya malizhar, if you aint got nothin for me tot rade or fix, I don't need it..that includes help"

"would your pappy say that?" Malizhar wistfully asks

"pappy's dead, now go!"

"charming as always young man.....anyway, I have news regarding that whole trade fixxing thing" he says wavering his hand.

"What now? Is it a new toolset?"

"No, its much larger....a trader ship is bringing a giant mechanical man to the port, they say anyone who can fix it and give them its main computer in working condition gets to keep it."

"A what?"

"Giant mechanical man..."

".....Hmm"

"I thought it might could be used a replacement for your fathers sandship...that things never worked"

"But I can make it work!"

"Yes, but this....should work easily for you."

"Well....any bargains worth checking out, maybe I can get some money for trading it for sandship parts..."

"So one minded...lets go"

Barady and Malizhar exit the shop and lock the door, and head towards the docks.

Rumors
People in the streets are whispering, word from the East, the Drow Empire in the North is building an army. The reasons are unknown, but speculation says that they are preparing to take over the Trade City. Whispers among the barmaids, tell tales that Drow have been seen sneaking through the streets of Trade City at night, though no attacks have been reported.

It had been one week since the seventeen year old girl had failed to kill the Sand Dragon, and was banished from her band. She stood atop a large dune that overlooked most of what was known as the ‘Badlands’ with her hawk perched atop her leather gloved hand. She sighed deeply as her sun bleached hair, which was held in a high ponytail, blew across her face in another hot gust of dry sandy air. She pulled the beige scarf back up over her nose and mouth to keep from inhaling the desert winds, knowing that as the sun began to set, the winds would only get stronger.

Her name was Kayle Alden. And she was a nomad of the desert; once a member of the Water Stone Band, now, the only thing that connected her to the tribe was a nearly clear light blue stone, which was tied around her neck with pale beige leather string. Her brother had given it to her on that day a week ago, when they had set out for her inanition, to kill the dragon. It was his stone, he had told her that she would make it, and that he wished for her to have his; something to bond them together. If it hadn’t been for her brother, she would have been dead that day, but he had risked his life to save his sister, and was cut down by the poisonous spines of the dragon. But at that moment, as she stood atop the dune with her hawk, she did not cry, she could not bring herself to feel any emotion other than shame, for all she could think about was how she had failed; how she failed her brother, how she failed her mother and her father, and most of all, how she had failed her band.

Her hand tightened grip around the handle of her Glaive; a long spear like weapon with a blade like a sword at its peak, while behind her, a small lizard had been watching for almost the entire hour that she had been standing atop the dune, her hawk had also been watching the lizard’s every move, until finally, upon Kayle’s adjustment, he took flight, striking down upon the small lizard with incredible speed. Kayle flinched from her bird’s sudden move, and turned to watch where he had gone. Her expression was empty as she watched the hawk rip through the lizard’s scaly skin, flipping little pieces of moist flesh into its beak.

‘Waste of water…’ She thought as she pulled a canteen from her belt, unscrewing the top from it, while she pulled her scarf down around her neck to bring the canteen’s mouth to her lips in the hopes of a last drop of water, only to receive moist air. She sighed again, attaching the canteen back to her belt along side a neatly tied whip and a sheathed Falchion.

Her clothing was surprisingly layered. Her legs covered with a thin beige material, strapped with light leather buckles and ties with the occasional blade tucked away in the straps. She wore soft beige leather boots which came up to just under her knees, tied with leather cords that wrapped around the entire boot. Her upper body was covered with tight fitting pale coloured armour, which seemed to be made a reptilian like leather, also covered in straps and ties, holding different things to other strings and ties. Her arms were bound with leather as well, from her wrist to her elbow, while her hands were gloved with hard, but flexible leather. Over one shoulder, and clasped to the other side which came up from under her other arm, she wore a shoulder cloak made from thin wool like material. With her gear, she could vanish into her surroundings, a skill that as a young child she was taught.

“I see you have your dinner for tonight, Sky.” She muttered as she walked over to her tan coloured horse, passing her hawk as she did. Though upon closer investigation, her horse was not mammal, but instead its beige colour was made of multiple layers of thick scales, its hooves where wide and did not sink in the sands, and its eyes were nearly black. In a skilled fashion she threw a leg over the steed’s bare back, onto the well crafted stale and pulled herself up so she was properly mounted. Two leather packs hung over the steeds sides, filled with dried meats and herbs, along with another canteen of water and some bread. She was hoping to get to the town of Bytuse within a few days, where she knew she would be able to barter herself a night in an inn, and refill her supplies, which she was starting to run dangerously low on.

“Come on.” She commanded to the hawk as she pressed her heels into the horse’s sides, starting in a steady trot down from the dune. “Bring your damned lizard along and you can eat it when we rest the next time.”

By this point the winds were ripping the dunes to pieces, sending the sand which covered the bank’s top, to fly off in waves. Kayle made sure her scarf was tightly tied over her nose and mouth, before she shielded her eyes with her arm. Sky quickly left his meal and mounted onto Kayle’s shoulder, keeping his head down and his body streamline, so not to be blown off from the high winds.

“Looks like we’re in for a long night, eh Sky?” She said with a muffled voice from the scarf, nearly drowned out by the winds as they vanished down the backside of the dune.

Sky fluttered his wings, burying his head behind Kayle’s neck and in her shoulder cloak’s hood, as the cloak whipped out violently behind them while they soldiered on.

Damen, walking towards the village (having only gone half a mile from his original position) stops and waves at the clouds, causing them to disapate. "This is taking too long" he thinks to himself, then stands staring at the ground, with his arms at his side, bend outwards horizontal at the elbows. He begins muttering words under his breath and slowly a dark glow eminates from him and blows slowly into small clouds around infront of him. For the next minute or so he continues staring at the ground and muttering, then brings his hands infront of himself and performing strange liquid movements with his hands and fingers.

The clouds begin to spin vertically in a circle, soft screams are heard from inside, and soft faces formed within the clouds and ripples. The clouds parted to form a ring, leaving behind a pure black hole hanging just above the sand, with Damen standing not more than 6 ft from it

"ooh, did it a little faster that time..." He said rather proudly to himself, then walked a few steps towards it, stopping infront of the hole as a loud scream exits from it "... AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH yourself!!" And with that he leaps in, the clouds slowly swallowing up the hole then disapearing themselves.

Inside, Damen walks along a thin bridge, with nothing either side, except other bridges, at different heights and traveling in random directions, going on until disapearing into the misty distance. Ghostlike beings flying around, and screaming at each other, one of them flying up to Damen, seeming to know him, then screaming and flying through his head. With which damen grabs his head and falls to his knees, letting out a yell in pain.
"AAAAAAAGH... Nice to see you too..." With his hand on the ground and on one knee stands slowly again.

He takes a few more steps then looks down off the side of the bridge, waves his hand slightly and another hole with a cloud forms horizontaly, below him
"So much easier to control magic here..." and leaps in. Falling out not more than quarter of a mile from the village.

"A little more madness is a little more appealing than a 6 mile walk." He says straightening his shirt collar and towards the settlement

Kayle pulls off the scarf around her face once the winds had died down; she was surprised how the storm didn't last more than an hour. Sky had already taken off in the clear skies, enjoying the freedom.

In the distance Kayle noticed something, something walking, and as she rode closer she recognised the figure as a Drow.

She pulled her reptilian horse to a halt a few meters behind the figure looking down.

"Wait a second" Damen looks around... "This isnt the Northern desert!!... Bah, a few too many finger movements in the alternate dimension and you end up MILES from where you want to be!!" He starts stomping and flailing his arms, not noticing that this area is more likely to be better suited to accomodate him, or that someone is nearby and staring at him.

Kayle blinked and her horse grunted while Sky landed back on her outstreched arm.

"My brother, Drow. Do... you need any help?" She asked with a raised brow, her glaive held loosly in her other hand.

He stops and looks up at her in a huff

"Not now woman! Can't you see I'm ranting??..."

He continues walking in circles and flailing his arms some more, muttering under his breath then stops and walks calmly towards her

"Now... could you tell me where I am please?" He looks up at her politely smiling charmingly

She shook her head, pushing Sky off her arm to fly off into the air while she undid the leather arm band, unknowingly revealing her tattoo that covered her hand and part of her arm; a tattoo that represented a marking made from a drow to that of another race.

"You're just a little ways out of Bytuse..." She looked over him, examining him with intrest.

"Bytuse eh?.." He says softly scratching his chin and looking pleased "... I have NO.. idea where that is..."

He spots the tattoo and steps closer to her leaning in to look at it, not too close as to invade the personal space though. "Where did you get that tattoo?..."

She looks at her arm and gasps quietly, quickely wrapping the leather back over it, and tying the bonds quickely.

"Euh..." Her horse takes a step back.

He then stands up straight, and brings his arm to his chest in a salute, then tips his head slightly in a bow.

"It doesnt matter, I am Damen Sa-ouff, a Black Sorceror of the Drow, and you are?"

She blinked slightly, her other hand noticably tighter around the handel of her Glaive, her knuckles white. Though she knew she shouldnt be frightened, her natural instincts had kicked in and her defence was up.

"I am Kayle Alden of the Water Stone Clan." She said, her reptilian horse started to become uneasy from her current air and seemed to ajust it's self with worry, it's black eyes cautiously watching the drow.
